British-Ghanaian talent unveils new play

British-Ghanaian actor, playwright and theatre director, Emmanuel Akwafo, is set to premiere his debut play, 'Limp Wrist and the Iron Fist', at London's Brixton House this October.

This hour-long production is based on Emmanuel's life experiences, and explores themes of power, black queer identity, and resilience.


"l want to enhance the audience's understanding on queer identity in the Black community by demonstrating the difficulties each character faces whilst they take us on their individual and shared journeys," Emmanuel said.


The all-male cast of Limp Wrist and the Iron Fist is composed of four talented actors who during a night out, deepen their friendship bonds by discussing their life experiences.


They bring to light experiences of violence, sexism, toxic relationships, and various forms of trauma, including sexual and child abuse, as well as challenges related to irreligion.


The play also addresses critical issues such as racism, homophobia, and racist stereotypes.


Jamal Franklin: plays Joseph


Jamal Franklin, a graduate of the University of Northampton, has extensive experience on stage, television, and film. He is notably recognised for his role as Daniel in the feature film Giddy Stratospheres.

 


Ashley Byam: plays Monday


Ashley Byam has made his mark on stage and television and has starred in two award-winning short films, Different Bayern and Lessons. His performance in Lessons earned him two Best Actor awards.

 


Dane Williams: plays Nathaniel


Dane Williams is an accomplished actor with recent television credits including a role in the BBC series Feels Like for a Girl. His work spans television, stage, and film.

 

 


Dwayne Black: plays Mohammed


Dwayne Black, who began his career as a musical theatre student in his teens, returns to the stage after a 17-year hiatus.

 



Emmanuel Akwafo: director, producer, and writer


Emmanuel is an Olivier nominated actor. He is known for his impactful performance in For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When the Hue Gets Too Heavy, and in Cinderella as the wicked stepmother Lady Jelly Bottom.


He will be returning to the stage as Lady Twerkey in Aladdin at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre from 16 November 2024, to 4 January 2025.


Limp Wrist and the Iron Fist will open at Brixton House from 9 -12 October 2024.
