March 2024: Year In Review

Ghanaians celebrated 67 years of independence from colonial rule in March, while also strengthened a colonial law that criminalises people in LGBTQI+ communities and their advocates.

The anti-LGBTQI+ bill was passed on 28 February sparking protests outside of Ghana.

Also in March, Ghana hosted the 13th African Games while in the UK, Rose Amankwaah, a former athlete who trained as a nurse, reflected on her time as a sprinter at the 1974 Commonwealth Games and 50 years in the NHS.



In music, singer Raye joined the Brit Awards hall of fame while two actors of Ghanaian heritage and an author bagged awards at the 55th NACCP Awards in the USA.

Ghanaians remembered the 150th year after the Sagrenti War, which resulted in the looting of Asante Royal regalia.


Meanwhile, the Ghanaians mourned the loss of Highlife icon George Darko and scientist Dr Thomas Mensah.
