Sotheby's African art auction to feature Ghanaian works

Renowned nonagenarians James Barnor and Ablade Glover are among eight Ghanaian artists to have their work up for sale at a leading international auction house in London.

Sotheby’s Modern & Contemporary African Art auction, will be selling off 98 lots of art from across the African continent, including Ghana, at its New Bond Street galleries.

Renowned nonagenarians James Barnor and Ablade Glover are among eight Ghanaian artists to have their work up for sale at a leading international auction house in London later this month.

Among the works by Ghanaians is a signed photograph of Eva, one of 94-year-old Uncle James’ iconic images, which features as the cover image in his book: ‘James Barnor Ever Young’.

Three other lots of Uncle James’ work will be auctioned also.

A total of five works by Uncle Ablade, who celebrated his 90th earlier this year, are to be auctioned too.

Meanwhile, the work of the late Dr Atta Kwami, who was an art historian and painter who died in 2021 and was the son of artist Grace Kwami, will be auctioned.

His piece called ‘Ansaku’ is estimated at between £30,000 and £50,000 - the highest value in the listings of art by Ghanaians.

Other Ghanaian named artists include: the late Dr Atta Kwami, Isshaq Ismail, Owusu-Ankomah, Yaw Owusu, Joesph ‘Paa Joe’ Tetteh Ashong and Ato Delaquis.

Online bidding begins on 20 September from 2pm British Summer Time (BST) and will close with a live bidding session on 27 September. The live bidding session will be streamed from 2pm BST.

If you have a few thousand pounds going spare, why not consider owning an original piece of African art?
