A British-Ghanaian serial entrepreneur has described being recognised in the 2023 New Year's Honours List as 'the icing on the cake'.
Newham resident Mavis Amankwah is a businesswoman, diversity trainer, and marketing and public relations expert.
She has helped around 800 businesses and employed more than 300 people over the last 20 years, receives a British Empire Medal for her services to the local community.
The Honours recognition marks the contributions of people to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service.
Icing on the cake
Mavis said receiving the honour was the icing on the cake for her in 2022, and follows her appointment as a goodwill ambassador the United Nations Association earlier on in the year.
“It is a great honour to be recognised for the work that I have been doing over the last two decades, in the local area and across the globe,” she says.
“Over the years, I have managed to run multiple businesses and help women and those from the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic community who may not necessarily have access to information to start, grow and sustain their business, organisations, and enterprises. I want to thank everyone that has supported me throughout the years.”
Professional business support
Mavis currently employs over 10 staff in her Canary Wharf and Westfield, Stratford premises.
She works with her under her various enterprises including Marvel Business Group, Women Like Me, Marvel Recruit, Rich Visions and Mavis Joy Consultancy.
Marvel Business Group Services specialises in providing professional business support, grants, and funding assistance to businesses, entrepreneurs, and organisations of all sizes.
The business also consults CICs, charities, and social enterprises that require funding to grow, and currently working with 130 clients.
During the last five years, Mavis has helped businesses, organisations and entrepreneurs secure over £12 million in funding.
The New Year Honours List is published on 30 December 2022.
